I found this brief article from Intent.com by Roger Gabriel on the effects of meditation to be very useful and insightful. Over the past year, I have made some minimal efforts at meditation, and I hope someday with further practice to more fully integrate concepts of meditation into my life.

The most important benefit of meditation is that it is a spiritual journey, which reconnects us with our true essential nature.
However, in the west, mediation is usually thought of as a program for stress reduction. Stress blocks the free flow of energy and information within our mind and body, preventing the communication necessary for healthy living. Meditation has been shown to give the physiology a deep level of rest, which allows the stress, tension, fatigue, and toxins to begin to dissolve naturally and effortlessly.
As these blockages are removed, the energy and information are able to flow once more and our bodies literally reawaken. Every cell of our body remembers who it is and how to behave in relation to every other cell, restoring health, vitality, creativity and happiness in every area of our lives.
